This week sees the first major sporting event of 2018 and the opening grand slam of the tennis calendar as the Australian Open gets underway.
Live scores at the Aussie Open
Some of you may remember, that last year for the first time Betfair where unable to provide the live scores via their API (which is where Bet Angel gets them from). Unfortunately, Betfair has confirmed they will not be providing them again this year. I’m not sure of the exact reason but it’s more than likely a licensing issue.
Not having a live score feed means any automation that you have or intended to use that triggers off scores or server conditions etc will not work in this tournament.
Although you won’t be able to run automation in this tournament we still have a whole season ahead of us and if nothing else this will be a good chance to get some manual trading under your belt and get a feel for how the markets work in order to create a bot/s ready for the next one.
Tennis trader
With no live score feed, it’s worth noting that the Tennis Trader tool will not be able to update automatically however it is still possible to use this unique profiling tool simply by manually updating the scores yourself. If you’ve never updated the prices manually before have a quick look at this thread from our forum.
If you have never used the Tennis Trader tool or this is your first-time trading tennis I would definitely recommend giving it a go. To help you get started there is a thread on the forum with some pointers and a few examples on how to use the tennis trading tool.

Despite the absence of the live score feed I’m still very much looking forward to getting stuck in. Tennis is my favourite sports outside racing and over the last few years I have begun focussing on it more and more and this year will be no different.
Tennis produces some big swings in prices which create lots of opportunities especially in the women’s tournaments so it’s not uncommon to see prices of favourites or those trading at <1.15 early in a match drift out to 2+ and back again.
Early risers
For those who are new to trading tennis and might not fancy the idea of sitting up all night, there will be plenty of matches still starting early morning UK time, so it fills a few hours in the morning nicely before the start of afternoons horse racing.
Last years tournament and the final especially between Nadal Vs Federer was one of the best in recent years and it turned out to be the foundation of a fantastic season, you can read how I traded that final here at the end of last years dedicated forum thread. If you get chance, It’s also worth browsing through the rest of the thread as there is plenty of charts which will give you an idea of what to expect.
There will, of course, be another thread running for this years which I will be active on and be updating regularly including some more charts etc as it progresses so feel free to check it out and join in the chat here
