Serena Williams crashes out of French Open

Low backers were handed an almightly thumping when Serena Williams crashed out of the first round of the French open this evening.

It is the first time the 2002 champion has lost in the opening round of a grand slam event. Those who read my article of last year on forecasting decline in players may have had half an eye on Williams, but few would have honestly expected defeat this early and in this manner. Most speculative short layers should have had a huge result.

Williams threw away a 5-1 lead in the second set tie break and Razzano, backed up by a partisan crowed, overcame cramp in the final set to somehow pull off a victory. The final game lasted 25 minutes and contained 12 dueces. A remarkable last game saw the odds flying all over the place. Razzano finally managed to take the match on her eighth match point.

Serena Williams was matched at 1.01 for £332k, 1.02 for £745k, 1.03 for £1.2m, 1.04 for £1.37m and 1.05 for £993k. Razzano touched 400’s
