Murray might
Reason to look forward to this afternoon’s gold medal Tennis match with optimism.
Age – Murray is younger than Federer and Federer, despite his world #1 ranking, is in decline. Just very gradual and from a very high peak. Murray is approaching his peak and when players peak anything is possible. Both players are on the process of converging.
Format – Murray got of to a great start at Wimbledon and flew out of the blocks before Federer used his experience and skill to grind him down. If Murray can boss the game then he stands a chance. The change of format from a three to a five set match in the final (thanks for the correction) should help the younger player, but as we saw in Wimbledon Federer used his experiance to frustrate Murray. Would have prefered a best of three in the final but historically longer matches favour younger players.
Psychology – Nothing like the prospect of revenge to ignite some passion. A passionate crowd and momentum from events elsewhere will add to the feel good factor. Worth a few points and some inspiration. The crowd is going to be very noisy today!
OK, so I’ve laid out possibles there and a it’s a bit partisan but I’d rank success as a definite possible today, upgraded from ‘not completely impossible’ at Wimbledon. Would have prefered not to see the change in format for the final. Federer has a great grass game, but maybe, just maybe, Murray can use everything in his favour today.
I can’t trade it as I will be in the Olympic Park watching it. I’m looking forward to watching the action in the Stadium this evening, can’t wait.
Good luck if you are trading the match today.
