2012 – The year I got a bit lazy

31/12/2012 | By | Reply More

Actually, that is an unfair headline, as nobody who knows me would stick the lazy label on me!

But, 2012 is the year where I didn’t feel compelled to trade every day , or every market on everyday. I was determined that 2012 would be the year where I would not spent as much time as previous years stuck behind my desk. As they say, you can’t take it with you, so you may as well enjoy it while you have the opportunity.

There were also mitigating reasons. One is that return on capital for me was likely to be lower in 2012, as it will be in 2013. This is a function of how long I’ve been in the market, but also we had other events such as the Olympics in 2012. Going to the Olympics was a dream for me and I was determined to take the opportunity to see as much as possible and to share that with my children. So that called for my first summer break pretty much since I started seriously on Betfair. It was simply amazing to be there when Mo Farah and Greg Rutherford got their gold medals and to witness the 100 m final live. Opportunities like that don’t come around very often, so I am glad I took the opportunity with both hands. Rio looks very tempting!

I have to say that I quite enjoyed 2012. I didn’t earn as much money as I did in 2011, but time  and experience will tell anybody that money isn’t be all and end all of everything. So I endorse this mantra and share the wisdom that it will always be more important to do things that you enjoy. This year I have done plenty! I enjoy travelling and last year continued my adventures.  Thanks to modern technology you probably never even noticed I’d been away!

When you have been around for as long as I have, it’s really tough to break individual trading records. I didn’t get a record week or month last year but I did get my biggest ever individual result last year. I’ve stopped putting stuff like this on the blog as it’s difficult to put some of these results into context, especially for people new to trading. But it’s pretty much been business as usual for me through the year, though we did notice a step change in the markets in July. The exchange market has continued to mature this year and Betfair has continued its battle to reconcile an innvoative product with the demands of being a listed company. Judging by their interim results it appears to be one they lost last year. 2013 is going to be an interesting year.

From a sporting perspective 2012 has been truly exceptional and I can’t think help any thing will beat it. But even if 2013 it’s half and what we saw in 2012 it will be a great year for sports! I hope you have a good night tonight and see in 2012 with some gusto, not too much though, as there is a busy sporting schedule awaiting us on the first day on the new year.

I left a good job in the consumer technology industry to go a trade on Betfair for a living way back in June 2000. I've been here ever since pushing very boundaries of what's possible on betting exchanges and loved every minute of it.
