Too much ‘not enough’ racing

It wasn’t really a surprise this morning to hear Newcastle had been abandoned. It seems over the last year they have only had a handful of meetings there. Winter hasn’t been great this year for sure, but it hasn’t been terrible and it’s amazing to see how many meetings have been lost.

But worse than that the number of runners at a lot of these meetings is miserable. Today we have only two races on the afternoon card that have ten or more runners. Lots of four runner fields and even a three!

I understand that racing has to provide a product, but surely that product should be appealing shouldn’t it? I am sure bookmakers don’t make much from uncompetitive small fields, so maybe racing should cull some of the most likely less appealing fixtures? I also realise that conditions can not suit all horses and yards, but wouldn’t racing benefit form fewer races but ones of much better quality and depth?

I know I for one would welcome it.
