The (cold hard cash) winners so far in the World Cup

OK we know who’s through and who is out, but how has that translated into a profitable strategy so far in the World Cup?

Listed below are the returns to £10 stakes on each team that has qualified for the knock-out part of the tournament. Of course, the best bet of the tournament again was to lay England to do anything reasonably useful. But  in reality, we should have all been on Costa Rica instead. But the returns here show you some scope for where value was in the market.

As always there is more than one way to spread your risk and trade the market. In this case if you would have dutched the outsiders in the tournament you could have ‘bought’ the book for 4.1% and exited for 6.9% at the start of the second round. That’s a return of 169% on your stake. A very worthwhile exercise.

Anyhow, here are the returns to £10 stakes so far

Negative – Brazil – Started at 3.95 now at 4.2 – Returns -£0.6
Negative – Argentina – Started at 5.4 now at 5.5 – Returns -£0.18

Postive – Mexico – Started at 290 now at 36 – Returns £70.56
Postive – Chile – Started at 48 now at 38 – Returns £2.63
Negative – Uruguay – Started at 30 now at 55 – Returns -£4.55
