French Open Tennis – Roland Garros

Today see’s the start of the 4^th Round of the Roland Garros and its certainly been an eventful first week to say the least.

On day one the women’s world number 1 Angelique Kerber was dumped out 6-2, 6-2 making her the only number one seed ever to be eliminated in the first round of the French Open – there has only ever been four number ones who have gone out in the first round across all Grand Slams.

Then on Wednesday in round two the women’s defending champion Garbine Muguruza also came close to defeat losing the first set then going a break down (1-3) in the second set before fighting her way back to win 6-7, 6-4, 6-2. This certainly made for just one of many great matches of last week to trade.

In the men’s tournament, the good ol’ Bank of Murray has been paying out again as he dropped early sets in both his first two matches. His second-round match began in true ‘Murray Style’ when he started at 1.08 and ended up facing a break point on his opening service game only to then be broken on his 2^nd service game which saw him drift out to 1.28. This was repeated in his 3rd round match against Del Porto when he was again broken on his 2nd service game this time sending his starting odds of 1.39 out to 1.71 – two very quick and easy low risk trades which has been repeated time and time again in every tournament.

Personally, I have always preferred to trade the women’s tennis matches over the men’s, as discussed in previous blog posts the women’s weaker serve (with the exception of Serena Williams) means breaks are far more common than in men’s matches which in turn usually increases the number of trading opportunities, also with the clay surface being the slowest of all surfaces this increases the chances of a break of serve even further (for both men and women). Throw all that together and its clear why this is one of my favourite tournaments of the year, even when not trading imo the matches themselves often make far better viewing with some very entertaining, nail biting rallies.

Hopefully as we come to the end of the first week the best may still be to come, In the women’s tournament, the fourth round of the French Open has the highest percentage of matches (34.18%) that require a 3^rd set to settle it so I’m expecting no shortage of opportunities here and throughout next week, it should at the very least be the best round for the strategy for ‘Laying the First Set Winner’.

As we get down to the business end of the men’s matches ill will be taking a closer look at these during this second week and will be expecting some tough fought slugfest’s which should present some ideal trading opportunities. It wouldn’t be right not to mention Rafael Nadal somewhere in this post (starting with that epic Aus open final with Federer back in Jan) Nadal is having an exceptional year so far and is now back on his favourite surface so really hope to see his run continue for as long as possible. So far he’s coasted through his first three rounds without dropping a set with his best performance coming in the last round when he swept his opponent away 6-0, 6-1, 6-0 in 1hr 30mins (In Murray’s 3rd round tie his 1st set against Del Porto lasted 1hr 24mins) so Nadal is looking very strong going into the second week.

If your new to trading or new to tennis trading it’s well worth giving it a go, to put some figures on it last year there was just over 550million traded over the fortnight on the French Open – to compare that with horse racing its highest monthly turnover during 2016 was during July and that saw 950million traded and that was for the whole month – there is money in them thar courts!
