The longest running Betfair market ever

News that Sir Alex Ferguson is about to retire has re-ignited interest in the long forgotten ‘Next Man Utd manager market’.

This is a market that must hold the record for the longest ever market on Betfair. Some must be glad it is coming to a close! According to the start date on Betfair, the market first opened on 17th September 2001! I realised it had been up there for some time, but that date even surprised me.

Since the market has been open there have been many ‘contenders’ for the job, which has never been available until now. Here is a list of them sorted by lowest odds matched: –

C. Queiroz matched at 1.1 for a total of £4
L. Van Gaal matched at 1.14 for a total of £60
J. Mourinho matched at 2 for a total of £1781.54
M. ONeill matched at 2 for a total of £10
J. Guardiola matched at 2.6 for a total of £48.7
M. Lippi matched at 3 for a total of £5.82
O. Hitzfeld matched at 3.1 for a total of £4
R. Keane matched at 4 for a total of £15.26
F. Capello matched at 4 for a total of £36
S. G Eriksson matched at 4 for a total of £4
S. McClaren matched at 4.1 for a total of £10
M. Hughes matched at 4.9 for a total of £4
A. McLeish matched at 5 for a total of £22.32
P. Ince matched at 5 for a total of £24
M. Jol matched at 5 for a total of £10
H.Cuper matched at 5 for a total of £10
D. OLeary matched at 5 for a total of £92
W. Smith matched at 5.8 for a total of £4
R. Giggs matched at 7 for a total of £4
S. Bruce matched at 7 for a total of £9
Jurgen Klopp matched at 8 for a total of £426.72
G. Hiddink matched at 8 for a total of £34.08
A. Curbishley matched at 8.6 for a total of £4
O. G. Solskjaer matched at 10 for a total of £196.24
L. Blanc matched at 10 for a total of £12.38
J. Ramos matched at 10 for a total of £10
L. Scolari matched at 10 for a total of £22
Darren Ferguson matched at 10.5 for a total of £5.08
G. Neville matched at 11 for a total of £9.76
S. Allardyce matched at 11 for a total of £9.3
S. Coppell matched at 11 for a total of £4
T. Venables matched at 12 for a total of £10
E. Cantona matched at 12.5 for a total of £3.72
G. Strachan matched at 16 for a total of £4
O. Coyle matched at 20 for a total of £7.16

Everybody and their dog is backing Moyes for the job currently so he may end up as the lowest price traded on this market. Elsewhere, Man Utd have drifted in the 2014 premier league winner market as a result of Fergies decision to call time on his reign at Man Utd.

Is there one more twist in this ever lasting succession debate?

I left a good job in the consumer technology industry to go a trade on Betfair for a living way back in June 2000. I've been here ever since pushing very boundaries of what's possible on betting exchanges and loved every minute of it.

    12 years, that’s amazing.

It’s quite interesting looking at those matched amounts though. It’s reminded me of a time when David O’Leary was considered the brightest young manager in English football!
