Santa delivers early xmas present
No I haven’t finally got a Christmas card from Betfair, just a catch up on events at Santa Anita a couple of weeks ago.
I’ve had an on off relationship with the breeders cup over the years but this year turned out to be quite good in the scheme of things. It was marked by good and bad races but the good ones produced something and the bad ones didn’t really lose much. So I’d rank 2013 as one of the better years at Santa Anita.
My performance masked a declining one from Betfair, which is becoming a problem TBH. Since 2009, at the off the turnover on the Breeders Cup has been £1.5m, £1.8m, £1.3m respectively. It then dropped when they shifted focus to their US sportsbook. Last year and this turnover was only £643k & £600k. That’s quite a drop. Across the card it was down £1.5m on last year. After last year I hadn’t expected much this year. It doesn’t look like I should expect much next year either.
Anyhow, this post should act as a marker for future years and a comparison for when we delve into the US markets again. Next overseas market for me will be Meydan in the new year.
