Not courtsiders this year, but pitchsiders
Last year we had a lot of fuss at the Australian open when a courtsider was arrested and it created a huge amount of publicity. But this year the focus seems to have turned to the Cricket.
To put the story into context you should realise that in-play betting is illegal in Australia. This seems odd, but it’s a corruption led thing. You can sort of understand how spot fixing can cause authorities to jump with alarm at in-play …
The rise and rise of Cricket trading
So it’s the Ashes and English expectations are high and liquidity is expected to be so as well. There have been some blockbusting markets on the Ashes in the past so I’m quite interested in keeping an eye on it this time around.
I have to admit though that I’m not a big cricket trader, yet. There are only 24 hours in a day and therefore I have to pick where to put my focus and all my time is …
Fourth wicket fall key for Indian trade
After six weeks of thrilling cricket we are down to the final two nations as they battle it out for the World Cup trophy on Saturday.
Australia are the most successful cricketing side at World Cups, having won the competition no less than four times. However, after Ricky Ponting’s side team were beaten by five wickets in the quarterfinals by India, so there will be a new name on this year’s trophy. The Aussies were chasing their fourth consecutive tournament …
World Cup Cricket
Some really massive matched amounts coming through these markets. New Zealand vs Sri Lanka reached £30m in matched bets and so did last nights big match between Indian and Pakistan.
I hadn’t considered doing much on this tournament but I’ll be taking a very keen interest in the final now given the level of activity on these matches. Advice to follow on another post.

Morgan inclusion offers opportunity
England’s World Cup bid suffered another setback with the news of Stuart Broad’s injury that has ruled him out for the remainder of the tournament. The loss of Broad was even more of a blow as Kevin Pietersen has already returned home for surgery. Paceman Chris Tremlett has been called in at short notice to help out with the bowling duties.
Eoin Morgan will step in to fill KP’s boots and is likely to have his first opportunity to impress …
Hoping for luck of the Irish
We don’t often discuss cricket, but the World Cup is on right now so it’s a good time to do so.
Just before the World Cup began I looked at England’s prices, and despite going unbeaten in their opening two group games, they have lengthened from around 6.0 to 10.0 to lift the trophy.
Next up for the Three Lions is Ireland and England will know they cannot take William Porterfield’s side lightly given their close call against another Associate …
Some winter cheer
One look at the racing card will echo what you will have seen for the last month or so, abandoned racing. It’s the worst period I have known in my ten years on Betfair, pretty bleak. Boxing day usually brings a whole slew of opportunity and some top quality action at Kempton. Today, out of the 11 meetings due to take place today, only one hasn’t been abandoned as I write this, and there is a real prospect of that …
Overreaction to Aussie supremacy?
Having taken a look at the stats in preparation for the fourth Ashes Test down under, one of the things that has really stood out is that there has not been a draw at the MCG since 1997. In that period there have been 10 Australian victories and England were beaten by an innings and 99 runs the last time the sides clashed.
There’s no denying that the Baggy Greens have an excellent record at the MCG, but traders should …
Trade the Ashes to Adelaide…
Australia enter the second Ashes Test under intense pressure after being humiliated by England, who managed to turn around the first Test in Brisbane last week.
The Adelaide Oval, venue for the Second Test, was once famous for throwing up frequent draws, although there have only been three here since 1991.
If anyone’s considering laying the draw on Betfair or Betdaq (currently trading at 2.06), I wouldn’t disagree with them, despite Australia seemingly lacking a convincingly reliable wicket taker and …
Too hard
There are many thousands of markets that will come under your eyes each year. So which ones should you do? The hard ones or the easy ones. Not a difficult question is it? So why do so many people pick situations that are likely to fall into the too hard category? I’ll explain on another post, but before that, let me explain how I approach each opportunity.
When I approach a market, I will label it easy, not sure or …
Arrest over test cricket ‘betting scam’
Another story in the press this morning about another alleged betting scam.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-11122388
The News of World appear to really savour these stories, perhaps will a little too much vigour? But there is no doubt that sport should be played for the right reasons and any corruption should definitely be rooted out. If you are in any doubt as to why gambling has a sullied reputation, its stories like these that produce it. Let’s hope that publicity like this will …
Ashes
I’m looking forward to the Ashes and if the markets are anything like the last time the Ashes were held in the UK, we could be in for a treat. I remember visiting Betfair’s offices just after the last test finished. It had turnover of £32m or something similar. There was a lot excitement and activity last time around.
I must admit to not having done much Cricket trading. It still remains a relatively untouched area for me. I have …
