Blackberry picking
Went out with the children this weekend to gather berries. At this time of year mother nature provides a feast right on your doorstep and it’s missed by many people. We gathered a whole variety of fruit from local ‘common’ areas, popped them in boxes, took them home and made some pies and crumbles. It’s something I’ve done as long as I can remember.
While advising the children which fruits to pick I realised that it’s not unlike participating in …
Underrated strategy
I covered the ‘lay the field’ strategy in some depth in racing ahead magazine a couple of months or so ago, it’s an easy strategy that works well and has been popular amongst exchange users for years. On Bet Angel you just need to set the odds, a value and click to lay the field.
To make it work, all you need to do is look for a market with a great deal of uncertainty about it. One market that …
Goodbye Windsor
I’m not leaving, but Windsor is. That’s it for the summer evening racing at Windsor and it marks that week that we transition to all weather only evening racing. The downside is you now have no get out of jail cards for a poor afternoon, good news is your social diary suddenly widens!
I managed to finish the last Windsor evening race of the year with a healthy £155 profit, but the rest of the day was a bit torrid. …
A clear cut trading signal
I’m often asked what is a good trading signal. In fact, many factors make up a potential signal and your tolerance to risk and mindset make up another factor that contributes to whether you can act on what you see or not. I quite like manic markets that seem out of control, but that’s because I can often see order in disorder, I’m tuned to that. Some people just can’t stand those markets. But there are some clear cut trading …
Return on turnover
While I’m in the mood let’s talk about return on turnover as well. I’ve tracked my return on turnover for some time as I feel this is the key to sustaining longevity in the market. It also tells you a lot about trading.
Adam Heathcote recently put up a spreadsheet sent by Betfair detailing how much he had turned over and earned this year. On this sheet is shows that Adam’s return on turnover was 0.17%. If you wind the …
Iffy start…. again!
Being a non horse racing type its always something interesting when I can identify a horse by name. I can’t understand how many chances this horse is going to get. It refused to race again today.

What’s that ebook racing system really worth?
Roll up, I have a new system for you, for no effort and little skill you can bag £50k a year and Sir, for you today, it’s only, Not £499, Not even £99, but just £37. But hurry I am closing offers on Friday and I only have 20 left!
Hmm, I bet you heard that pitch before, it seems every day my inbox is accosted by offers telling me they have a foolproof system for sale. But if you …
Outrageous risk – Part One
This is how many would describe the following strategy I am about to outline.
The strategy takes on the maximum risk possible in a market, here it is :-
Go into the market at 1pm and back every favourite with a £1 tick size….. that’s it! Ok, you will have to close your position before the off, but that’s about it from a strategy viewpoint. No offsetting your order or closing out one tick away from your entry price. By …
How many racing traders are there?
I often get asked how many traders are on the exchanges, how much volume do they do etc? The honest answer is that I currently don’t know, but I can confirm roughly how many existed a few years ago.
Back in 2003 Betfair issued a document that actually clearly laid out what a market looked like. In the document they looked at a horse race and showed how many people placed back bets only, how many laid only and how …
1000-1 winners
Ok, maybe that should be 999-1 winners. Been using the quieter time this week to drift through some data. Over the last two years guess how many winners at 1000 in horse racing have come in?
The answer may surprise you, according to Betfair data its 102 winners. All but one of those drifted to odds of 1000 in running, only one was 1000 before the race started and went on to win. Fortunately I actually bagged that one, but …
“Windy hedge” for Cheltenham
If I ever buy a horse this would be a good name! But this isn’t the name of a horse. Regular readers will know that Cheltenham last year was a bit of a mare. They abadoned racing on Wednesday then bundled in those races to the Thursday and Friday. That made things mighty tough. Sky bet have offered up a bet this year for odds that racing will be abandoned in the event of a windy day. Odds offered were …
The colour of money
One of the things I do often is get a grip on the colours and numbers of a horse. The reason I do so is because if one of them bolts I would like to know very quickly which horse it is. I would have thought in running punters would do the same but it doesn’t appears all of them do. Of if they do they let a quick profit cloud their vision.
Last night at Windsor the commentator called …
