Has this happened before?

Has this happened before?

An oft quoted phrase.

But, Man U 0-1 Leeds United. That was a big turned up for the books wasn’t it? Or was it?

Well you don’t need to wind back far to see the last time a similar thing happened. I looked at matches where the home team were priced between 1.25 to 1.30 for a home win. Curiously, where this involved an English team playing a foreign team, the English teams were very dominant. Focusing just on domestic …

Sombre

Just sat here this evening watching “Tsunami : Caught on camera” on Channel 4. I remember very well the shock of the pictures I saw when the boxing day Tsnnami hit but it’s nothing compared to the footage and commentary from the documentary this evening.

A timely reminder as I look toward next year, that pursuit of happiness and self fulfillment is a key value that you shouldn’t forget. Wealth is not measured by monetary values alone and doing things …

Klassy Kauto

Klassy Kauto

Great performance by Kauto Star in the big race on boxing day. He was priced to win, but not with such certainty. In the end Kauto Star completely and utterly destroyed the opposition in spectacular style. Compilers have now upped Kauto’s rating into the 190’s making him one of the greatest chasers the sport has ever seen. It’s been great to watch the progress of this gelding in the time I have been on exchanges. I think it’s a shame …

17:47

Today at this exact time we marked the winter solstice. It’s a day I look forward to as it is the shortest day of the year. From now on in we are counting down to Spring, not up to mid winter.

The weather looks set to continue to play havoc with the sports and with only one meeting on at Southwell tomorrow, it’s time to get festive. We had big snow fall this afternoon and it lay down some of …

Nothing to play for

Nothing to play for

No action this evening for me. With the Wolverhampton twilight card proving a bit of a mare and a lot of big volume Europe league matches having bearing on the outcome of the groups, it’s a really dull evening in prospect. A good excuse to get down the pub for the last quiz of the year. I can watch some of the ‘action’ on the TV there instead.

It’s been a generally positive December so far and tomorrow, snow pending, …

Pressure on

It’s that time of year when I often turn my attention to a few unusual markets. For my research into these markets I tend to visit this page: –

https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/surface_pressure.html

The markets I am looking at are the ‘White Christmas’ markets. I’ve done pretty well on them in the past and fancy a go this year again as sleet is forecast this week.

Typically the YES markets work against you as time progresses, so laying the NO is the best …

Gamble on Giggs

Gamble on Giggs

I noticed this evening that Jenson Button had fallen away from the favourite status and there is a bit of a gamble on Ryan Giggs to be sports personality of the year. It’s worth noting that, in the past, the favourite of this competition has often not won. Also, there are some odd results thrown up on these competitions. I’m pretty suspicious of how these competitions are won in the current format. I suspect they are open to abuse.

I …

R&R

As December and winter in general are quieter months I’ve been looking to get my life back a bit and take some time out to re-charge my batteries for next year. I have a hospital appointment coming up and the results of that will determine what I do in the next couple of months, so a break now seemed a good idea, just in case.

For something completely different this week, my wife and I went on the Orient Express. …

Wacky Wolves

Wacky Wolves

This evening Wolverhampton provided a really interesting finish to my week. In several races the prices were all over the place and there were some huge drifters and steamers. As a result of this and a generally positive day, I managed the unusual feat of eclipsing all the other days of the week put together. Can’t complain, but it’s just very unusual.

The action started early when High Constable moved in from 3’s to 1.50 before the off. That’s a …

But the stats said?

But the stats said?

The recent Man City vs Arsenal match was a good match to appraise theory with reality. It’s always worth having and using stats to see what is likely to happen on average. But if you are in-play there is not point in thinking the odds will fit a perfect curve if the TV is telling you something else. A weakened Arsenal side really didn’t bring the game to City right from the off and this was reflected in the odds …

November

November

Despite my pessimism in October, November went a lot better than expected and I ended up a whopping 44% year on year. Not all roses though. As we slip into the harder period of the year I did suffer on individual days and my strike rate fell away. I made too many mistakes by being over aggressive at times when it just didn’t make sense. Hopefully I’ve learnt my lesson on this.

I owe most of my success last month …

Massive gamble landed

Massive gamble landed

Wow, not the biggest of the year but a huge steamer in the grade 7 opener at Kempton this evening. Opening in the 20’s the price completely plunged in all the way to 3.35 before bouncing out again to go off at 4.20. I was watching TV with the kids so I missed most of this, but still managed to get a decent profit out of it. There was lots of money matched at big prices some a fair few …

Four year hoodoo ended!

Four year hoodoo ended!

Ever since I watched Southampton relegated from the premiership four years ago, my presence at a football ground seems to condemn the home team. I don’t get the chance to see many matches nowadays, but every match I turn up to since then, ends with the home team unable to win. Regardless of the quality of the teams, whether its the champions league or a more minor game, I have been unable to watch a home team win. Finally I …

Betfair back, but not SP

Betfair back, but not SP

Betfair returned to normal about 1/2 hour after it went offline. Apparently their host lost connectivity which was the cause of the downtime and not any underlying technical issues.

For me, I’m annoyed, as I had an SP bet waiting to be matched before the official off time. Betfair are supposed to manually reconcile these bets when there are problems like this. On this occasion however,  it was just cancelled. My log in Bet Angel shows clearly that the bet …

Just after the off at the 14:30 at Uttoxeter Betfair look like they have had a serious crash. We haven’t had any news from Betfair at the moment as to what has happened, but the whole site including the API has gone.

Just remarkable

Just watched a horse throw its jockey, break through the barriers from the all weather to the National Hunt course, run the entire length of that course, smash through the barriers on it’s return, continue bolting to the start and guess what? It STILL started a 5f race! If finished 5th out of 7 runners.

I can’t believe they still let this horse run. It’s remarkable that they didn’t really care that much for the horses welfare. I know the …

1234 & 9-1

Amazing result from Spurs on Sunday. Not often you get to see 10 goals in a match, especially nine of the them in the second half. That said, Spurs did get a 6-4 against Reading on 29/12/2007. In the same season we also had Portsmouth vs Reading on the 29/9/07, which produced a 7-4 scoreline. I have actually watched a 10 goal match. It was Southampton vs Coventry, which Southampton won 8-2. Some time ago though, that was back in …

Liverpool vs Man City

Liverpool vs Man City

I’ve had quite a few emails on this match so here are my prices.

Liverpool – 2.02

Man City – 4.30

Draw – 3.60

As you can see the market has it pretty much spot on, maybe very minor value on Man City. I know my prices are within 0.10 accuracy over the course of the season so I can’t see any value. Both teams probably won’t want to lose this one so perhaps a tentative match is likely?

A …

Massive match fixing probe launched

Massive match fixing probe launched

German prosecutors have launched a probe into around 200 football matches. They suspect a number of matches, including champions league and Europa league matches, have been targeted by criminals who bribe players and officials to fix games. The criminals made money by betting on the results.  Matches under investigation were played in Germany, Belgium, Switzerland, Croatia, Slovenia, Turkey, Hungary, Bosnia-Hercegovina and Austria.

More detail here, German coverage here.

Get me out of here!

Get me out of here!

With the UK racing markets bumping along the bottom at the moment I rejoined one of the few specials markets that I will trade, “I’m a celebrity, get me out of here”.

Those who have been on my course will know why I joined this market and it didn’t disappoint again this year, though the volume was a bit low. With a full green on the market I messed around last night during the coverage and was surprised at home …

How to turn over a 1.60 shot

How to turn over a 1.60 shot

I knew Southampton would lose yesterday, or at least not win. How? Well there were two key overriding factors in yesterdays match.

First, I had bothered to make the trek to the south coast to watch the match. Because of the unsocial hours of the sports markets I don’t get the chance to watch much sport so when there is a team nearby that plays when I can watch, I’ll often nip along. Unfortunately for Southampton every time I watch …

Will I make a profit this week?

Yes and no I guess?

Yes I will make a profit, but technically I will right up against the wall, why?

Last week with the Melbourne Cup, Breeders Cup, the UK racing and the champions league it was a busy week. This week there isn’t a great deal on the card. On Wednesday the premium charge came out for last week and it was a big one. This week I may struggle to get in a day what I managed …

Real Copa Crash

Real Madrid crashed out of the Copa Del Rey last night. As though that wasn’t bad enough for Real Fans it was to lowly AD Alcorcon. Priced at 1.39 to win the first leg away Real Madrid promptly got thrashed 4-0. But that was OK because they had 90 minutes of the second leg to turn it around. Last night they stumbled to a late 1-0 win and stumbled out of the cup.

Football value this evening

A quick glance on this evenings football has through up Leeds as a clear value candidate. Rather than duplicate the information here, please have a quick read of the posting on the forum. Bear in mind that value only appears over time, so you need to stake with that …

At the adverts..

Hmm, a distinctly poor week ahead by the look of it and today we are ‘treated’ to a day on ‘At the adverts’, err.. ‘At the races’ I mean. At least we can use the red button to watch the build up a bit better, but we are never over the moon when faced with a winter card all on this channel.

On a close look the card doesn’t look terrible but with small fields and long races I doubt …

No fireworks

Don’t get me wrong, there were plenty of fireworks around yesterday. We are very lucky to live just across from a field where a big annual display takes place, very useful. But at the Breeders Cup last night it felt like I’d only been given a couple of sparklers in the back garden.

For some reason while this meeting is a decent betting heat it never really seems to catch fire from a trading perspective. I did just fine last …

Breeders cup

There are not many races I tend to do in the US, but the Breeders Cup is one of them. I’ve often looked at key races in the US but there just doesn’t seem to be enough interest in them. Even the Kentucky Derby barely registers on the trading Richter scale from a volume perspective.

However, the Breeders Cup is different and is worth a look. One of the problems you will have is that the key races tend to …

Some interesting charts

In these very dull UK markets excitement is hard to come by, but here are some interesting charts for you.

First a weird one from Fairyhouse yesterday. It’s fairly obvious that the Irish racing is quite likely to be more volatile than the UK racing, this race in particular was always going to see the odds move around a fair bit. But I didn’t expect to see what happened here.

This next chart was certainly more readable. Tons of money …
