Trading Tennis at the Australian Open
January is when the Tennis season starts up again and it’s a great time to get some Tennis trading experience under your belt. With weaker markets elsewhere, the Australian Open is a great time to get going on Tennis.

Some statistics on the Aussie Open Tennis
I’ve started digging my way through my data and notes, so here is some data. Only mens at the moment. I’ve made my comments strategy neutral, so you will have to work out from it what it from you wish!
The average number of games per set was 9.81 which is above the long term average, this was a more competitive tournament than usual. You have to go back to the 2000 tournament for a higher number.
The average number …
Key turning points in a Tennis match
When trading you want to look for key moments to trade in and out. Sometimes these can be arbitrary, a goal up, a goal down, certain times. A set up, a break up etc. etc.
Today I saw a turning point in the Australian Open final that I hadn’t witnessed before and one that I had.
I’ve mentioned before about how players are keen to get opponents out of the zone where possible, but today this happened in an unusual …
Azarenka vs Li Na
Well that was an interesting final, not quite what I expected and a lot of it revolved around Li Na’s ankles.
Detailed below you can see the profit profile for Azarenka. This is basically telling you what would have happened if you backed Azarenka at the start. Above the line means you would have profited by backing Azarenka or laying her opponent. Below the line means the opposite.
In total, excluding brief periods above and below it flipped six times …
The appeal of Tennis trading
Some decent matches this week at the Australian Open, it’s been a good opening week. Don’t forget to use Tennis Trader!!
There are two key aspects of Tennis trading that should interest you if you haven’t traded tennis before.
(1) No pre-defined length of match
I was active on the Kvitova vs Robson match, which eventually ran into the start of the racing. This is always a problem with Tennis. Being a competitive match, both players fought hard to …
Australian Open Tennis
The start of the year is a great time to get some Tennis trading experience under your belt.
The Australian Open is the first grand slam tournament of the year and usually presents some good opportunities. Last year we were treated to a legendary final which I documented on the blog. The final turned over £46.2m in matched bets in total. The thread on the forum documented a lot of the action during the course of the tournament and …
Extra rest will help Djokovic
Andy Murray booked his place in a second successive Australian Open final following his four set victory over David Ferrer.
While Murray has looked solid throughout the tournament, the outstanding Novak Djokovic stands in the way of the Scot’s Grand Slam dream having beaten Roger Federer in the other semi-final. The Serbian is chasing his second Aussie Open title and has had an extra days rest before Sunday’s showdown.
The head-to-head record stands at 4-3 in Djokovic’s favour, although Murray …
Tennis trading lessons
A couple of neat lessons were served up by the Tennis yesterday and both showed that statistics don’t always give you the key to actually understanding what is going on in the underlying market.
First we had the Federer match. Struggling with a vibrant opponent you could have counted Federer out for the count, but a revealing post match interview revealed what was going through his head at 2-6 1-3 down. Federer commented on how the sun was bothering him …
Best trading match of the tournament?
It’s not often you get such close matches so early on in a tournament, but massive credit to James Blake for almost pulling off a big shock today. It could be one of the best trading matches of the tournament; I think it will difficult to beat. In the last set you could have laid Del Petro at 1.06 only to see him reach break 2’s just minutes later. Fantastic stuff, great trading fodder and very entertaining too. Del Potro …
Classic final underway?
Currently watching some great tennis this morning at the Aussie open in Melbourne. I’d be happy to hit just one of these shots when I play tennis, let alone on each stroke. It’s generating some great trading opportunities as well. Unfortunately I have promised to take the kids swimming so I am likely to miss out.
As an example, when Nadal broke Federer in the first set the price moved out a fair bit, but this also left Nadal to …
