Derby Day!
Isn’t the Derby in June? Yes and no….
If you are in Australia, early tomorrow morning (UK Time) is Derby Day at Flemington in Victoria. This kicks off the Melbourne Cup carnival and a week of top class Australian action. On Tuesday we have the race that stops a nation, the Melbourne Cup then more top quality days on Thursday and the following Saturday. It’s a busy period full stop on the horse racing front, as we also have the …

Santa delivers early xmas present
No I haven’t finally got a Christmas card from Betfair, just a catch up on events at Santa Anita a couple of weeks ago.
I’ve had an on off relationship with the breeders cup over the years but this year turned out to be quite good in the scheme of things. It was marked by good and bad races but the good ones produced something and the bad ones didn’t really lose much. So I’d rank 2013 as one of …

Lots of good quality racing
It’s the time of year for marathon trading sessions. Lots of quality racing around, just none in the UK!
UK racing starts in the early afternoon, then morphs into evening racing. Today and tomorrow we also have the Breeders cup in California late into the night UK time. As that ends we immediately switch to Melbourne Cup meeting at Flemington.
In theory you could trade on just racing from just after midday right through to 7am tomorrow morning. It would …
The long day…………..
Today we have an interesting session. UK racing trundles on from afternoon to evening racing, then the Breeders Cup meeting comes on line in the US. As the Breeders cup meeting on the Friday draws to a close, we then morph to Australian racing and the final day at the Melbourne cup meeting. The remarkable Black Caviar runs again tomorrow and is a incredible 1.06 to win it’s group one race. I think that’s untradeable, but I am tempted to …
Zenyatta – History not made
A real disappointment to see Zenyatta not make history this evening. But an odd ride by the jockey who was trailing by some distance for most of the race and only produced Zenyatta on the last bend. While I can’t claim to be a jockey or understand racing that well, with such a huge prize on offer, it seems odd to have ridden the race like that.
Pretty liberal use of the whip late on as well as it was …
No fireworks
Don’t get me wrong, there were plenty of fireworks around yesterday. We are very lucky to live just across from a field where a big annual display takes place, very useful. But at the Breeders Cup last night it felt like I’d only been given a couple of sparklers in the back garden.
For some reason while this meeting is a decent betting heat it never really seems to catch fire from a trading perspective. I did just fine last …
Breeders cup
There are not many races I tend to do in the US, but the Breeders Cup is one of them. I’ve often looked at key races in the US but there just doesn’t seem to be enough interest in them. Even the Kentucky Derby barely registers on the trading Richter scale from a volume perspective.
However, the Breeders Cup is different and is worth a look. One of the problems you will have is that the key races tend to …
