The Oak’s Betfair’s first ever market
So today we reach the Oaks and tomorrow the Derby when the summer racing really starts to step up a gear. The start of June means Royal Ascot is just around the corner.
If you are a Betfair newbie you may not know that the Oaks at Epsom was Betfair’s first market way back when they started in June 2000. But it was a little later that year, on June 11th. Mark Davis reminisced on his blog about it. I …
Let’s hope the Derby is this exciting
I’ve taken a diversion from just just posting an image of a result to putting some detail into events at the Oaks today. It was such a fascinating market from beginning to end.
The first thing that happened was ‘Legatissimo’ contracted quite heavily, but the pictures showed that it wasn’t enjoying it’s journey to post, so it looked a obvious lay. Slowly but surely the market reacted to it’s behaviour. This generally got worse till the horse cleared the main …
Derby Day
A traditionally good day for racing traders today with the Derby upon us. We had the Oaks yesterday and that proved OK, if a little tricky in places. The market was flowing over with money and that made it hard to get a decent fill at the right risk. The overall turnover was only £2m vs. £2.5m the year before so that was disappointing. Overall there were four races that exceeded £1m for a total of £7.5m traded at post …
The Oaks – Betfair’s first ever market

Derby Day – Trading outlook
An OK week so far. Some of the racing hasn’t been great, but that’s given me more time to work on the French Open. A distinct lack of ‘shocks’ so far but slow and steady wins the race, as they say.
Looking forward to Derby day though and it can produce some big volumes. Last year Epsom produced £12.3m matched bet turnover for the day but that was a bit distorted by Camelot. Just that race alone accounted for around …
The Derby on BETDAQ
Last year I consciously decided to allocate a lot more of my time to learning and understanding how the markets on Betdaq work in great depth. No guess for what prompted this! In the past I’d tended to cherry pick markets as it was easy to find markets that were more suitable for my style, but I felt I really should make the effort to work harder on ALL markets.
A year on and I’m active on pretty much all …
The Royal Derby
Many thanks Ma’am for bringing some focus to racing on your Diamond Jubilee, it is much appreciated.
The Derby market is a funny one for me. Over the years I have flip flopped between good and bad results. Looking at today’s race, it looks a bit tricky. With Camelot going off at such a short price interest in the market will be high and I expected there will be significant volume in the market. That’s great, but it will squash …
Fab Friday
Today, we have a decent looking day ahead of us on the sporting front.
The Epsom derby meeting kicks off today and the Oaks is always a reminder of the first race that Betfair took bets on back in June 2000. To be honest I haven’t really ripped through this Friday for a few years. So I’ll be taking things careful until I get a feel for the day.
At the French Open the top four men in the world …
Oaks
If you would have asked me what the Oaks were ten years ago, I would have talked to you about what the Victorians planted en masse on the green in the next village on from where I live. Now, my first thought turns to Epsom. How things have changed in ten years.
It was the Oaks that was Betfair’s first market ten years ago, but it was on the 11th June that year, not the 4th. So Betfair are just …
Epsom
Got a good result on the first at Epsom, lets hope the rest of the day continues like this.
Looks like coverage is on the BBC, so if you want the fastest pictures possible tune into the BBC today and tomorrow. A good comparison for you if you want to judge fast pictures etc. The rain that is forecast is likely to see some strong moves develop in the market as the ground changes. Good luck!
